How to Search for Reliable Administrative Jobs
The biggest challenge that many people face when they seek administrative jobs is to find reliable employment. Quite a few people get burned by fraudulent websites and flyby night jobs.
These people don’t have to because there are ways to spot the reliable administrative jobs and apply for them. Taking some time to learn these methods can save a job hunter a lot of grief and expense.
How to Find Reliable Administrative Jobs
- Go to reliable websites and sources. The days when newspaper want ads were a good source of jobs are long over. Many newspaper want ads and websites are now full of very low end jobs or scams trying to rip off job hunters. The average job hunter will be better served by websites such as www.monster.com
- Go directly to the employers. If you are interested in working for a particular employer go straight to their website. With the bad economy many employers aren’t even bothering to post jobs elsewhere. Most organizations post job openings right on their websites so go there first. In many cases job openings will be put on websites before they are advertised.
- Word of Mouth. Ask those you know about job openings. If you know people who work for major employers in your area ask them if there are job openings there. Also ask about job openings at places you go such as your house of worship, and organizations you belong to. You may be surprised how many jobs are out there.
- E-mail. If you have a list of contacts in your industry e-mail all of them with your resume and ask about job openings. It’s free and it may get results. It’s also a good way to network.
- Network. Participate in professional associations, trade shows, community groups etc. Get out and meet people in your business and ask them about jobs face to face. It does work fairly well. One “networking opportunity” that is usually a waste of time is job fairs.
- Temporary Agencies. Legitimate temporary agencies particularly the local offices of the big national temporary agencies such as Kelly and Robert Half can be great sources of jobs. Contact them as soon as you begin your job source. The people who work there actually know the hiring managers at employers and talk to them. Send every temporary agency in your area your resume. You will be surprised by the way they can get a resume around.
- Consultants and headhunters. These are companies that provide services to companies and government. These firms are always on the look out for good employers. In particular office services firms like Ikon are often hiring and pay fairly well. They are also a great source of lower level employment.
- Get together with other job hunters. Try and get together with some other people who are looking for work. Meet for coffee or organize a formal group. Simply sharing notes is a good way to find job openings. The moral support such groups can provide can keep you going.
