Write Job Winning Administrative Assistant Resume

A resume will not automatically win you a job but it can be the first step in getting a job. Resumes are important because they are the first introduction to a job candidate that a perspective employer receives.

This means that a resume needs to make you look as good as possible. It needs to make an HR manager or supervisor say: I want to meet that person.

Always keep this thought in mind whenever you sit down to write a new resume or revise an existing resume. Remember the more time and effort you put into the creation of a resume the better it will be. So be prepared to spend at least a few hours creating or revising your resume.

Some Tips for Writing Job Winning Administrative Assistant Resumes

  • Never be content with your resume. Look over your resume every time you send it out. Look for mistakes, and look for better ways to write it.

  • Revise your resume on a regular basis. Try to rewrite and revise your resume on a regular basis usually once a month.

  • Make sure that all the information on your resume is current. Make sure that everything is up to date on the resume and that it complies with current standards.

  • Try to tailor resumes to job applications and announcements if possible. If you see a job that you really want write a resume specifically for it.

  • Emphasize your experience as an administrative assistant. If possible eliminate all experience except that as an administrative assistant and in related positions.

  • List skills related directly the position of administrative assistant. In particular list office specific skills such as typing, typing speed and software that you know.

  • Emphasize your technical proficiency. List software you know, office machines you can operate, courses you’ve taken and your experience with IT.

  • List your accomplishments as an office assistant. List responsibilities you’ve had, time on jobs and responsibilities at past jobs. Also awards and recognitions that you’ve received.

  • Emphasize your ability to multitask. With resources limited many employers like administrative assistants to be able to perform a wide variety of duties. List job experience or skills you have in other areas such as shipping clerk, receptionist, legal assistant, accounting etc.

  • Emphasize flexibility. Listing a variety of different jobs on a resume can show that you are flexible and willing and able to multitask.

  • List job experience. Listing a lot of job experience shows that you are interested in work and you are career minded. Listing non job oriented information such as education, volunteer work, etc. indicates you have little experience.

  • Be specific. If you can list specific information about your job skills and background you will look more impressive. Name specific software you’ve used and list the number of phone lines you’ve answered. Detailed information is more convincing than vague descriptions.

  • Be willing to send more than one resume. Don’t be afraid to send your resume to the same employer again. If you’ve revised your resume or your job information has changed. Send the resume in again. Also send resumes again if you believe the person receiving them has changed.
