Writing an Effective Office Administrator Resume

The key to writing an effective office administrator resume is demonstrating that you have the skills and experience necessary to fill the job. To do this you have to quickly communicate what skills and experience you have to those reading the resume.

The best way to do this is to create a simple and easy to read resume that emphasizes your professional experience and skills. The resume should be simple and easy to read because perspective employers are more likely to look at such resumes.

HR managers and supervisors don’t like to admit it but they are much more likely to throw out a hard to read resume unread. If the resume is the least bit confusing or complicated it will go straight into the trash can.

Tips for Making a Resume Simple and Easy to Read

  • Keep paragraphs and sentences short.

  • Avoid big blocks of type.

  • Try not to use any sort of unusual, fancy or hard to read type. No cursive or Italics should be used.

  • Avoid shading. It can be real hard to read especially on a computer screen.

  • If possible double space lines. This makes it easier to read.

  • Use bullets and bold type to highlight important points.

  • Delete anything that’s hard to understand.

  • Avoid big or complicated words. For example use skill instead of proficiency.

  • List important points at the top and less important information such as education on the bottom.

  • If you print it, print it on plain white paper because that’s the easiest to read.

  • Make sure e-mail and html prints in black. Gray or blue letters are harder to read.

  • Eliminate all but essential information. Try and confine the information in your resume to the basics: skills, education & job experience. Avoid anything else.

Some Other Ways to Make an Effective Resume

  • Always proof read your resume before you send it out. Effective proofreading is easy. Simply read the resume over several times and look for mistakes. Try to make it error free.

  • Have somebody else read your resume and tell you what they think of. In particular have an honest person read it. If they are confused by the resume revise it.

  • Always be ready to improve your resume. If you think or see a way of making your resume look better implement it on the next version.

  • Write in a professional style.

  • Copy the resumes of others.

  • Always include all of your contact information including telephone, fax, e-mail and address.

Look for examples of other resumes online

There are dozens of websites that list examples of resumes including office administrator resumes. Go on line and examine these resumes. Then when you find one you like that you think is effective you can copy it.

When examining resumes online pay particular attention to the ones that you do not like. Try to identify the characteristics that you don’t like so you can avoid repeating them in your resume.

A final piece of advices is that a resume should say why somebody should hire a person. If a resume does not say that it is not effective.
